David A. Stein is a partner at Donahue Gallagher Woods LLP. His practice emphasizes litigation in the areas of construction, real estate and general business disputes. Before joining Donahue Gallagher Woods, Mr. Stein was a founding partner of Stein, Rudser, Cohen & Magid LLP. Previously he practiced with major civil litigation firms in Oakland and San Francisco, California. He has had full responsibility over cases with claims exceeding one million dollars. Representative clients include architects, engineers, public entities, owners, general contractors and sub-contractors.
Mr. Stein teaches Construction Law at Diablo Valley College. Previously, Mr. Stein was a panelist for Lorman Educational Services program entitled "Tricks, Traps And Ploys Used In Construction Scheduling." He also served as a panelist for the Continuing Education of the Bar program: "Construction Law - Contracts and Disputes," and co-authored the article "Construction Claims From the Architect/Engineer Viewpoint," presented for the 1984 Spring Conference on "Construction, Claims and Disputes for Owners, Contractors, Architects and Engineers" co-sponsored by Engineering News-Record and the Construction Education Management corporation. Mr. Stein lectured for Golden Gate University Center for Professional Development on construction contracts and claims in residential real estate development. Mr. Stein was a consultant to the Continuing Education of the Bar in developing a "Mentor Access Pack" for handling mechanic's lien claims.
He serves as a mediator for the Alameda County Bar Association, and provides private mediation services.
A lifelong Oakland resident, Mr. Stein currently serves on the Advisory Board for the East Bay Agency for Children, the Advisory Board for Friends of Oakland Parks & Recreation, and the Board of the San Francisco Council, Boy Scouts of America. He is a Past President of Oakland Rotary.
Mr. Stein was admitted to the bar in 1982 in both California and Massachusetts. He received his B.A. degree with high honors in 1978 from California State University, Hayward. In 1981, he earned his J.D. degree from the Hastings College of the Law, University of California, where he was a participant on the Hastings International and Comparative Law Review and a teaching assistant in contract and real property law. After graduation from law school, Mr. Stein served as a law clerk for the Superior Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Mr. Stein is a member of the American Bar Association, Alameda County Bar Associations and the State Bar of California. He has been named a Super Lawyer by San Francisco Magazine, an honor bestowed on just 5% of the lawyers practicing in Northern California. He is admitted to practice before all trial and appellate courts in the State of California, the Northern and Southern Federal District Courts of California, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
