Brian Murray founded and leads the Chicago Office's Issues & Appeals Practice. He handles appeals in federal and state courts across the country, and also coordinates and tries commercial, multijurisdictional, and class action cases.
With dozens of arguments to his credit, Brian is routinely called upon to brief and present clients’ most complex and significant appeals to tribunals nationwide. He has handled matters before the U.S. Supreme Court, nearly every federal court of appeals, and a significant number of state supreme and intermediate appellate courts, including Illinois, New York, California, Michigan, and Ohio. In 2012, Law360 named Brian an Appellate “Rising Star”— one of only five in the country.
At the trial level, Brian has tried matters to bench and jury, representing plaintiffs and defendants. Most recently, as lead counsel, he secured a complete federal jury verdict in a high-profile real estate brokerage dispute. Other recent engagements include class actions involving antitrust, consumer fraud, labor and employment, RICO, contract, and environmental claims; litigation against federal and state governments involving the Clean Air Act, the False Claims Act, section 1983, and constitutional claims; and other complex civil matters including patent, product liability, shareholder derivative, and securities cases, as well as commercial arbitrations.
Brian acts as the Firmwide Lateral Hiring Partner. He teaches Complex Litigation at the University of Chicago Law School. And he serves on the Seventh Circuit Bar Association (chair, Membership Committee), the American Inns of Court Foundation Board (Seventh Circuit trustee), and the National Immigrant Justice Center's Litigation Steering Committee.
