A trial attorney for more than twenty years, David E. Meier joined Todd & Weld in March, 2008, from the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office in Boston, where he had been the chief of the homicide unit since 1996. As Chief of Homicide, Mr. Meier supervised the investigation, prosecution, and trial of all homicides occurring within the City of Boston. Upon leaving the Suffolk District Attorney's Office to join Todd & Weld, a Boston Globe columnist noted that cases handled by Mr. Meier as a homicide prosecutor “exemplify his devotion to truth over expedience.”
During his career as a trial prosecutor in Suffolk and Middlesex Counties, Mr. Meier conducted extensive grand jury investigations, tried dozens of major homicide cases, and argued and briefed cases and issues before the appellate courts. He was involved in the post-conviction review and investigation of numerous cases leading to the release of defendants wrongfully convicted of murder and other criminal charges.
As Chief of Homicide in Suffolk County, Mr. Meier was the lead state prosecutor in various multi-agency investigations involving federal, state, and local law enforcement officials. He was a member of the DNA working group and represented the Commonwealth in various Daubert hearings related to the admissibility of certain scientific and forensic evidence. Mr. Meier was responsible for overseeing all aspects of homicide case investigation and prosecution, including crime scene response, grand jury investigative work, indictment, trial preparation, motion hearings, trial, and post-conviction proceedings. He was consulted by and provided background information to Court TV, 60 Minutes, Dateline, and various CNN productions.
David Meier was recently recognized by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly as a 2007 “Lawyer of the Year,” an award granted for “integrity, professionalism, and determination”. He was cited for “working behind the scenes to seek justice for victims and their families, as well as those who had been wrongfully convicted.” In 2004, Mr. Meier was awarded the Prosecutor of the Year award by the Massachusetts District Attorneys Association. In 2004, he was also profiled in Boston Magazine for his extraordinary work in the area of wrongful convictions.
At Todd & Weld, Mr. Meier is pursuing both a civil and criminal trial practice.
