Jonathan McDonald has practiced law in Helena since his admission to the State Bar of Montana in 2006. He graduated with honors from the University of Montana School of Law and received a B.S. in News and Editorial Journalism from the University of Nebraska-Omaha, where he graduated magna cum laude. He worked as a newspaper reporter in New Mexico for five years and was awarded the E.H. Shaffer award by the New Mexico Press Association in 1999 for his coverage of crime in northern New Mexico.
In law school, Jonathan competed on the National Moot Court Team, placing first in the Pacific Northwest region and advancing to the national finals. He practices in the areas of personal injury litigation, insurance law and workers' compensation law. Jonathan has handled numerous claims and has co-tried cases resulting in plaintiffs' verdicts, including a case over health-insurance benefits and a consumer protection trial. He is admitted to practice in all state courts in Montana, as well as the United States District Court for the District of Montana. He is a member of the American Association for Justice, the Montana Trial Lawyers Association and the American Bar Association.
Jonathan vigorously advocates for his clients' rights and seeks to maximize settlements of cases which are not taken to trial. He fights with the insurance industry daily so that injured people are not further damaged by callousness and unfair offers.
Born and raised in Nebraska, Jonathan moved to Montana in 2002 with his wife, Jennifer, a fourth-generation Montanan. They have two children, Maggie and Cormac, and live in Helena.
