Gorman, Thomas A.

Patrick Duffy focuses his practice on insurance litigation and complex liability, with extensive experience in jury and bench trials in state and federal courts as well as arbitrations. He handles a range of litigation matters, including medical malpractice, professional liability, personal injury, workers’ compensation and general liability defense.

Before earning his law degree, Mr. Duffy was a fire claims representative for State Farm Insurance, where he evaluated claims made by insureds to determine extent of covered losses, negotiated settlements, and administered satisfaction of claims, including extensive work with contractors.

While pursuing his communications degree at Villanova University, he received a full scholarship for outstanding work achievement while employed by the Athletic Department. Mr. Duffy currently serves as the board secretary of the Santoro Foundation, a nonprofit benefiting prostate cancer research and awareness. He was recognized as a 2010 Rising Star by Pennsylvania Super Lawyers magazine.

Representative Experience

• Defended a hospital against a $4-million claim of delayed diagnosis. After aggressive and detailed preliminary objections to the plaintiff’s complaint, the plaintiff ultimately filed a praecipe to dismiss with prejudice.
• Obtained dismissal for a hospital of a $3-million claim that emergency room failed to diagnose ischemic stroke. After analyzing plaintiff's medical and employment records, conducting depositions and consulting with treating physicians, a private investigation produced a video so conclusive of "clear fraud" that plaintiff’s counsel filed a praecipe to dismiss with prejudice.
• Obtained summary judgment for a hospital in a case alleging traumatic birth injuries to a baby delivered prematurely.
