2. Smyth County, Virginia: an elderly farmer had his hand severely damaged from the rupture of a hydraulic hose on a brand new farm mower. The product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer of the mower resulted in a jury verdict of 1.75 million dollars.

3. Huntsville, Alabama: a young salesman for a start-up defense contractor sold some 25 million dollars of the company's product and services but was denied the payment of his earned commission by Pratt and Whitney which had purchased the company. Jury verdict: 1.6 million dollars.

4. Oxford, Mississippi: a middle-aged woman leaving a Fred's Drugstore tripped and fell over a split rail barrier placed 10 inches off the ground outside the exit doors to deter shoplifters. The woman broke a wrist and shattered an elbow. Jury verdict: 1.2 million dollars.

5. Toledo Ohio: a young 16 year old intoxicated teenager riding in a car with other intoxicated youths was struck and killed by a highway construction truck that failed to yield the right of way at 4 am. Result: the case settled for an amount in excess of one million dollars after 4 days of trial.

6. Houston, Texas: a young girl was born brain damaged due to the medical negligence of doctors and hospital personnel at one of the largest hospitals in Houston, Texas. The case settled pretrial for a multi-million dollar amount.

7. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: a young five year old boy with sleep apnea died within 24 hours of undergoing outpatient tonsillectomy surgery because of a failure to keep him in the hospital and monitor the effects of narcotics administered to him. The case settled in trial for a multi-million dollar amount.
