Cindy Vreeland is a partner in the Litigation/Controversy Department, and a member of the firm's Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group.
Practice
Ms. Vreeland focuses her practice on patent and trade secret litigation and has represented a wide range of clients in a variety of commercial matters. Her intellectual property clients have included companies in the fields of wireless devices, semiconductor chips, computer storage, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, superconducting materials, machine vision, voice messaging and computer software. She also has represented clients in a range of other business disputes, including contract, antitrust, fraud and trademark litigation.
Recent Highlights
- Represented a major medical device company in a three week jury trial in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The jury found that each of the two patents asserted by our client was valid and infringed.
- Represented a major wireless device company in a three week jury trial in the Central District of California. The jury found that each of the three patents asserted by our client was valid and infringed. Broader dispute between parties subsequently settled for more than $890 million.
- Represented a major computer storage company in a suit in the District of Georgia alleging infringement of a patent relating to a credit security system. The parties reached a favorable settlement shortly after we took over the case.
- Represented a semiconductor company in a two-week trial before the US International Trade Commission. The ITC found the primary patent asserted against our client unenforceable because the inventors failed to disclose highly material prior art to the Patent Office with the intent of deceiving the Patent Office.
- Represented a fruit juice company in a two-week jury trial in the District of Massachusetts. The jury agreed that our client did not breach a contract between the parties.
- Represented a major computer storage company in a three-week jury trial in the District of Massachusetts. The jury found that each of the three patents asserted by our client was valid and infringed. Broader dispute between parties subsequently settled for more than $325 million.
- Represented a pharmaceutical company in a two-week trial in the District of Delaware. The court rejected IP-related antitrust claims against our client.
- Represented a medical information company in a suit in the Northern District of Texas alleging infringement of a patent claimed to cover storage area networks. We secured a favorable settlement shortly after taking over the case.
- Represented a major lithography company in a five-week trial before the US International Trade Commission. The ITC found that each of the seven patents asserted against our client was not infringed, invalid, and/or unenforceable because of the inventors’ inequitable conduct.
- Represented a materials company in the trial of a “patent interference” proceeding. We successfully reversed the Patent Office’s finding that a patent owned by our client, and a patent application exclusively licensed to it, “interfered.”

Ms. Vreeland is a fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America (LCA), an invitiation only trial lawyer honorary society.

- Named a "New England Super Lawyer" (formerly "Massachusetts Super Lawyer") in the 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 issues of Boston Magazine. Also named a "Massachusetts Super Lawyers Rising Star" in intellectual property litigation in the 2005 issue.
