Ash Upreti is an associate in the Litigation/Controversy Department.
Practice
Mr. Upreti's practice focuses on patent litigation, antitrust litigation and criminal defense. Mr. Upreti currently represents a technology company before the US International Trade Commission, in a case involving smart phones and tablet devices. His experience also includes the representation of a client in a patent litigation matter involving GPS technology. Mr. Upreti was also part of the team that represented Intel in connection with the FTC's administrative complaint of alleged FTC Act and antitrust violations relating to microprocessor and other computer-related markets. He has also been involved in the firm's representation of a generic pharmaceutical company. In addition, Mr. Upreti maintains an active pro bono practice, in which he represented clients in their criminal appeals before the Eighth Circuit and the Maryland Court of Special Appeals.
Past Experience
While in law school, Mr. Upreti worked as a legal intern for the Honorable Theodore R. Essex, Administrative Law Judge on the US International Trade Commission (ITC). From 2008 to 2009, Mr. Upreti participated in the criminal division of the DC Law Students In Court legal clinic, where he defended indigent criminal defendants in the Washington, DC Superior Court.
Prior to law school, Mr. Upreti worked as a patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Upreti examined patent applications in surveillance systems, medical imaging, digital watermarking and other image processing technologies.
Mr. Upreti also worked as a product development engineer for a medical device company in New Zealand. As an engineer, he designed electronics for a new medical device used in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.
Professional Activities
Mr. Upreti currently serves as a director on the board of directors of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association Educational Fund (AEF).
From 2007 to 2008, he served as co-president of the GW Law American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Mr. Upreti went on to serve as a board member of the ACLU of the National Capital Area, and as chair of the organization’s Future Leadership Council from 2008 to 2009.
In New Zealand, Mr. Upreti was involved with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). Between 2003 and 2004 he served the organization in a variety of leadership roles, including being the co-founder and chair of the New Zealand North IEEE GOLD (Graduate) Group.
