Matt is an associate in the firm of Briggs and Morgan, Professional Association. He is a member of the Financial Institutions and Real Estate Section, and the Bankruptcy Practice Group. He practices principally in the areas of:
Matt has extensive experience handling commercial real estate and real estate finance matters on behalf of corporate clients. He represents banks, investors and other financial institutions in structuring, negotiating and documenting a variety of commercial finance transactions, including real estate loans, asset-based lending, and mezzanine financing. He also practices in the area of commercial real estate and leasing.
Matt has represented lenders all over the country in connection with the origination of mortgage and mezzanine loans for commercial properties ranging from $1 million to $8 billion. He has also represented lenders in connection with the sale and assignments of mortgage and mezzanine loans, participations, and the review and negotiation of intercreditor, co-lender and servicing agreements. Most recently, he secured $13.7 million mezzanine financing, on behalf of a lender, in connection with its acquisition of a manufacturing company. He also represented another lender in its recent purchase of a $30 million loan and negotiation of intercreditor and servicing agreements with the lender of the companion securitized loan.
Matt practiced several years with a North Carolina firm before joining Briggs in 2008. While practicing at his previous firm, he also concentrated his practice on real estate finance and among more recent work, he:

Represented a syndicated lender group in connection with multibillion-dollar securitized first priority mortgage loan and mezzanine loans to finance the acquisition of 600-plus hotel properties;

Represented a mezzanine lender in conjunction with a multimillion-dollar mezzanine loan closed concurrently with a billion-dollar mortgage loan secured by several apartment complexes;

Represented a lender in connection with a loan secured by a hotel and office building, where the property was subject to an existing ground lease and bond financing issued by city; and

Represented a lender in connection with a mortgage loan secured by a 690,000-square-foot shopping center, which included the negotiation of numerous subordination and non-disturbance agreements with anchor tenants.
Matt is admitted to practice in Minnesota and the U.S. District Court, District of Minnesota; New Jersey; North Carolina; and New York. He received his B.A. in political science from the University of Michigan and his J.D. from Fordham University School of Law. Prior to private practice, Matt served as in-house counsel for an international real estate brokerage and property management company based in New York.
