Education and Experience
Susan grew up in the suburbs south of Los Angeles, California. She attended college outside Los Angeles at Occidental College, a small, distinguished liberal arts college which is the oldest private four-year college west of the Mississippi River.
Probate Litigation Experience
Since beginning her practice at Anderson Bradley Krant, Susan has handled many probate, guardianship and conservator litigation matters. She is experienced in trust dispute litigation and can help in will contest and beneficiary claims. Susan has successfully pursued cases against trustees for breach of their fiduciary duties and can also work toward an out-of-court resolution through mediation and settlement procedures.
Construction Defect Litigation Experience
Susan spent a number of years at a firm in the East Bay specializing in the defense of construction defect claims. She represented general contractors, subcontractors, architects, and engineers in multi-party litigation, condominium projects, and complex litigation. Many of these matters were adjudicated through the use of special masters and mediators, and Susan is experienced in working toward dispute resolution through effective negotiation with an eye toward containing litigation costs. Significant cases included representing a waterproofing subcontractor in a 500-unit high-rise condominium structure where water intrusion was alleged; representing a plumber in a large subdivision in San Ramon where copper contamination of the drinking water was alleged; representing engineers and other design professionals in claims of geologic damage to residential structures; and representing developers of various condominium projects defending against claims and pursuing insurance coverage on their behalf. Susan also began advising construction companies and reviewing and drafting their contracts in order to avoid the pitfalls of litigation.
Business Litigation Experience
Susan also worked at a small business litigation firm in San Francisco, representing clients in a wide range of matters. She gained trial experience in breach of contract actions, she appeared in numerous administrative forums, and she provided general business litigation and claims avoidance advice to small business owners.
Product Liability Defense Litigation
For four years Susan represented a Fortune 500 electrical manufacturing company, working on a team including engineers and corporate counsel which oversaw product liability claims and litigation across the nation. She also participated in risk-management and litigation avoidance training for company employees, reviewed and drafted standard and specialized contract terms, and assisted in legal analysis of proposed company policies and product literature. Susan regularly appeared in courts across the country on behalf of the electrical manufacturing company, and she managed local counsel's activities in those jurisdictions.
Personal Injury Litigation Experience
After graduating from law school in 1987, Susan went to work at a small personal injury law firm, where she participated in a four-month long jury trial involving catastrophic injuries resulting from an electrical explosion at a high-rise office complex. While at that firm, she also represented other burn victims, victims of psychological injuries, medical malpractice claimants, and she prosecuted claims against government entities for negligence.
Oregon Practice
After founding her own law office in Ashland, Susan handled litigation matters on behalf of local law firms which needed help on a variety of cases. In addition to providing intensive legal research, she represented a commercial developer in a complex construction defect claim, represented contractors in transactions, in litigation, and in Contractor Board proceedings, negotiated commercial leases and she provided litigation assistance in related disputes.
