Dan Kiss joined the Jackowiak Law Offices in 2007, where he concentrates his practice in civil rights litigation and criminal defense. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Dan relocated to Chicago soon after he graduated from Oberlin College. He began his legal career in 1998, joining the Cook County Public Defender's Office straight from law school. Dan is licensed to practice in the State of Illinois and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
While serving as an assistant public defender, he accumulated extensive trial experience representing well over a thousand clients. The bulk of his time was spent in the Felony Trial Division, defending indigent clients on offenses ranging from property crimes to first degree murder. It was during this practice that Dan formed the professional relationships with defense attorneys, prosecutors and judges which inform and enhance his work today.
While an assistant public defender, Dan recognized the links between working conditions for public defenders and the quality of legal representation for their clients. He joined the executive board of the Cook County Public Defenders Association (AFSCME Local 3315) and helped negotiate two consecutive three year contracts that delivered substantial increases in pay and benefits for the union's 450 attorney members.
In 2002, Dan co founded the Jack Carey Scholarship Fund, a non profit which awards scholarships to law students aspiring to become public defenders. The Fund has awarded 25 scholarships since its inception, nurturing the careers of new trial lawyers in the Chicago area and beyond. Dan continues to work for the Fund, and encourages any interested applicants to contact him.
Dan is also active in Chicago's music scene, playing bass for Soft Targets, a band on Roostercow Records. Soft Targets regularly perform at numerous venues around Chicago, and have gotten airplay on radio stations including Q101, WLUW and WNUR.
