Kala is a native of Wynot, Nebraska. She graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and minors in English and Spanish.
Kala attended the University of Wisconsin Law School, obtaining her Juris Doctor in 2009. While in law school, she was involved with the Wisconsin Journal of Law, Gender & Society, first as a member of its writing program, which resulted in publication, and later as a senior editor. She also worked with the Legal Assistance to Institutionalized Persons Program, served as a research assistant for one of her law school professors, and spent a year interning with the Dane County District Attorney's Office.
Before joining Zalewski, Klinner & Kramer, Kala served as a prosecutor with the Marathon County District Attorney's Office for over three years, where she managed a high volume of cases and gained valuable litigation experience.
