Ben G. Irons II was born in Greenville, North Carolina. He attended public schools in Greenville and in 1967 graduated from J. H. Rose High School. He earned his B.A. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1971 after being inducted into Phi Beta Kappa the previous year. He graduated from the UNC School of Law in May of 1974 and was licensed to practice law in North Carolina in September of that same year.
After finishing law school, Mr. Irons and his wife, Susan, moved to Raleigh, NC where they lived for 14 years. The couples' children were born in Raleigh. While in Raleigh, Mr. Irons served as an Assistant Attorney General and as a Senior Advisor to the Secretary of the North Carolina Correction. In the Office of the Attorney General, he handled civil and criminal litigation in the state and federal trial and appellate courts. He also wrote briefs for the Supreme Court of the United States of America, and he remains a member of the bar of that Court.
Mr. Irons was appointed as East Carolina University's University Attorney effective January 25, 1988, and he served in that position until March of 2005. Since September of 2005, he has served as the Pre-Law Advisor at ECU. He resigned from that position in 2009. Mr. Irons and his son, Gib, founded the firm of Irons & Irons, P.A. on August 15, 2007.
