Mona Shapiro practices exclusively as a civil litigator, handling a large variety of legally and factually complex litigated matters, primarily arising in real estate and business contexts. After graduating from New York University School of Law, she began her career in a New York City firm. She also taught legal research and writing at New York University School of Law. In 1984, she joined Shapiro Gettinger & Waldinger, LLP and created the firm's litigation practice group, which she continues to manage. She became a member of the firm in 1988.
Ms. Shapiro represents a large variety of clients, including individuals, real estate owners and developers, banks and mortgage lenders, and public companies. She is a tenacious advocate, and takes a creative and practical problem-solving approach to complex issues. Ms. Shapiro is known for her knowledge of substantive law and precision in her written work. She regularly handles challenging matters involving large sums of money and difficult issues. She has tried jury and non-jury cases and arbitrations, argued numerous appeals in both State and Federal courts, and drafted many successful substantive and procedural motions. She has 60 reported cases, including decisions of the New York and Second Circuit Courts of Appeals, Southern District of New York, and Appellate Division, First, Second, and Third Departments, as well as several “Decisions of the Day” reported in the New York Law Journal.
