Russell is a native Texan, but has lived in North Carolina his entire adult life. After graduating from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham, NC, he obtained his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from North Carolina State University. After graduating from North Carolina State, Russell spent a year as a financial analyst before earning his J.D. Degree from the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University.
While in law school Russell was a two-year member of the Editorial Board of the Campbell Law Review, a member of the Christian Legal Society, Delta Theta Phi Legal Fraternity, and other organizations. During his time at Campbell, Russell was also privileged to take part in the international exchange program with Handong International Law School in Pohang, South Korea, as well as participating twice in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna, Austria for which he and his team were awarded prizes for both oral and written advocacy, as well as the Order of Old Kivett. Russell was also awarded book awards in International Business Transactions and Administrative Law, and served as a Martin Luther King, Jr. intern with Legal Aid of North Carolina focusing his time on Disability Appeals and Domestic Violence issues.
Russell is an attorney for the Charles Mack Citizen's Center Senior Pro Bono Project and continues to work with Legal Aid of North Carolina on a volunteer basis assisting the victims of Domestic Violence. He is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association and Iredell County Bar Associations.
