JOEL I. GILBERT is a Partner in the firm's Birmingham office. His practice encompasses a wide range of general, federal and state environmental matters. Specifically, Mr. Gilbert represents developers, industrial clients, utilities, and business coalitions in the following areas:
· 1) Environmental Permitting & Compliance (advising clients with respect to obligations under the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, the Endangered Species Act, and other environmental laws)
· 2) Environmental Issues in Business & Real Estate Transactions (advising clients with respect to environmental obligations arising in commercial transactions under the Comprehensive Environmental, Response, Compensation & Liability Act, the Endangered Species Act, and other federal and state laws)
· 3) Environmental Litigation (representing clients before state and federal courts and administrative proceedings)
· 4) Administrative Regulation (representing clients before state and federal agencies, including the preparation of comments in response to the recent regulatory reforms promulgated pursuant to the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act) and
· 5) Legislative Affairs (working with clients and governmental entities to draft and review legislation, including issues related to the environment and natural resources).
Prior to beginning private practice, Mr. Gilbert served as a judicial clerk for Justice Jean Brown of the Alabama Supreme Court. In addition, before attending law school, Mr. Gilbert was employed by a national mining and chemical company where he held numerous positions in its safety, health and environmental department.
