While in San Antonio, Maggie volunteered for the San Antonio Bar Association's Community Justice Program, where she translated and edited the Spanish version of the San Antonio Bar Association's Family Law Manual. Maggie also volunteered for the Community Justice Program's wills clinic and the disabled children's education clinic at Texas RioGrande Legal Aid. Maggie then became Briefing Attorney to Judge Tom Price at the Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin, Texas. As a Briefing Attorney, Maggie wrote opinions and bench memos, attended oral argument, and reviewed writ of habeas corpus dispositions and frivolous filings.
Maggie then moved to Houston to pursue a Master of Laws in Health Law at the University of Houston Law Center. While completing her degree, Maggie published articles addressing issues of mental health court systems and punishment of pedophiles. Maggie's thesis proposed a new model for punishment and treatment of sexual offenders in Texas.
After completing her LL.M. degree, Maggie worked as a contract attorney to Randall O. Sorrels at Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Sorrels, Agosto & Friend. While at Abraham Watkins, Maggie evaluated potential clients' claims; researched personal injury and medical malpractice issues; responded to discovery; prepared clients for and presented clients at depositions; served as translator for the court during trial and for the parties during mediations; participated in jury selection for trial; and drafted a variety of documents-including but not limited to-demand letters, federal and state motions, and other pleadings.
