STEVEN F. CORONADO is an attorney with extensive trial experience having participated as lead counsel in over fifty jury trials. He has tried cases in both Missouri and Kansas State and Federal Courts. He was recognized by Missouri Lawyers Weekly as one of Missouri's "Winningest Defense Lawyers" for 2010.
Steve is a past member of the Board of Directors for the DRI (The Defense Research Institute) (2007-2010). He is a past Chair of DRI's Products Liability Committee (2005-2007). In the past, Steve has served DRI as the Vice Chair of the Products Liability Committee (2003-2005) and as Co-Chair of the Products Liability Specialized Litigation Group on Consumer Goods (1994-2003). He is a member of DRI's Diversity Issues Committee and served as Chairman of DRI's 2002 Annual Meeting. He also is actively involved in the Trucking Law Committee and Fire and Property Specialized Litigation Group. Locally, Steve was one of the founding members and a past President of the Greater Kansas City Hispanic Bar Association. Steve is a past Chair of the Missouri Bar Association Client Security Fund Committee. Steve is currently an Officer and member of the Board of Directors for the Missouri Organization of Defense Lawyers (MODL).
Steve co-authored the Missouri Chapter of the Defense Research Institute Compendium on Expert Witnesses published by the Defense Research Institute in 1996. He also co-authored The Missouri Chapter of the Second Edition of the Defense Research Institute's Book on Product Liability Defenses. Steve has also authored or co-authored a number of articles for FTD (For the Defense) and other DRI committee publications. Through the years, Steve has spoken at various DRI seminars including, most recently, the Products, Trucking Law, and Damages Seminars. Steve's predominant practice is in the area of general civil litigation with particular emphasis in products liability; construction litigation; trucking accidents; nursing home liability; governmental entity liability; and general personal injury.
Steve is a founding member of Coronado Katz LLC. He was previously a shareholder of Sherman Taff Bangert Thomas & Coronado, P.C., where he started his practice in 1989. He is licensed to practice in Missouri (1989) and Kansas (1990); and is admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri (1989); U.S. Court of Appeals, Eighth Circuit (1996); U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas (1990); the U.S. Court of Appeals, Tenth Circuit (1991); and the United States Supreme Court (2003); Federal Court of Appeals (2010).
Steve completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, receiving a B.A. Degree (with honors) in 1980. Between 1980 and 1987, Steve worked for the Kansas City Star/Times where he gained experience in managing people and deadlines. Steve earned his J.D. Degree at the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1989. Beginning in 1989, Steve was mentored by the firm's founding partner and past President of DRI, Joe Sherman, until Joe retired in 1993.
Steve was born in Kansas City but raised in nearby Independence, Missouri. He currently resides with his wife, Sherry, and four children, Samantha, Shannon, Steven and Samuel, in Kansas City, Missouri. Steve takes a hands-on approach to many of the things he does and, in particular, with regard to raising his children and, accordingly, he has no true hobbies. However, he does count watching his children mature as one of his most enjoyable pastimes.
