Charles Eppolito III is a partner in the Litigation Department and a member of the Healthcare Practice Group. His practice consists primarily of medical malpractice defense, and he also has experience in other insurance defense areas.
Mr. Eppolito represents a wide variety of health care clients, including hospitals and physicians throughout Pennsylvania. He has also represented insurance carriers (primary, excess and re-insurance) throughout the nation. He has practiced in approximately twenty different counties or other jurisdictions, both state and federal, throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Mr. Eppolito has successfully tried medical and psychiatric malpractice cases to verdict in jury trials and has arbitrated others to successful resolution. He has participated in numerous catastrophic medical malpractice and brain injury cases. He also has significant experience in mediating cases, and has secured many favorable outcomes through the alternative dispute resolution process.
Mr. Eppolito is a Hearing Committee Member for the Disciplinary Board of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, which position he has held since 2004. Mr. Eppolito is also an active member in the Pennsylvania, American and Philadelphia Bar Associations. He recently completed a three-year term as the Secretary of the Pennsylvania Bar Association (an Association of approximately 29,000 lawyers). He has served two separate three-year terms as a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Board of Governors (2001-2004 and 2007-2010), and has been a member of the PBA House of Delegates since 2001. Mr. Eppolito was the Chair of the PBA Young Lawyers Division in 2002-2003. He has also led or served on a number of committees and task forces of the PBA. In addition, Mr. Eppolito has been active in the American Bar Association, serving in its House of Delegates, the Tellers Committee of the House, and on a number of other committees and sections of the ABA. Among others, he is a member of the ABA's Medical Professional Liability Standing Committee and the Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS). He is presently the Chair of the ABA/TIPS Medicine and Law Committee. He previously held a number of leadership positions in the ABA's Young Lawyers Division. Mr. Eppolito is also active in the Philadelphia Bar Association, having served on its YLD Executive Committee. He is presently on the Board of the Justinian Society of Philadelphia. Mr. Eppolito is a member of the Pennsylvania Defense Institute, having previously served as chair of its Young Members' Committee. He is a past member of the Centre and Dauphin County Bar Associations.
Mr. Eppolito has also been a speaker or panelist for a number of professional programs, including effective trial advocacy, trial strategy and tips, effective selection and utilization of medical experts, alternative dispute resolution, mentoring, diversity, and quality of life/balance. In addition, he has coordinated and presented a number of public service programs, including programs relating to the jury system and others relating to promoting diversity and tolerance.
Mr. Eppolito's accomplishments and service have been recognized by a number of sources. He has received the honor of being named a "Lawyer on the Fast Track" as selected by Pennsylvania Law Weekly, The Legal Intelligencer and a panel of judges throughout Pennsylvania, for his professional achievements and promise as well as his contributions to the legal profession and the community. Mr. Eppolito received the Michael K. Smith Excellence in Service Award from The Pennsylvania Bar Association in 2007 for his exemplary personal and professional conduct, and his service to the profession and the community. Mr. Eppolito was named a Pennsylvania "Rising Star" attorney five times since 2005, including in 2011, by Law & Politics magazine as a result of a survey of his peers.
Mr. Eppolito received his B.S. in Business Administration, cum laude, from Villanova University in 1992, and his J.D. from Villanova University School of Law in 1995. He is licensed to practice in Pennsylvania, and is admitted to appear before the United States Supreme Court and the United States District Court for the Eastern and Middle Districts of Pennsylvania.
