Karen graduated suma cum laude from Hamline University School of Law. She developed an interest in criminal law while working at the Hennepin County Attorney's Office, prosecuting traffic offenses, and assisting in the prosecution of gang- and gun-related felonies. She previously worked as a judicial law clerk to both the Honorable Patricia Belois of Hennepin County District Court and the Honorable Randolph Peterson of the Minnesota Court of Appeals. As a judicial law clerk at the appellate level, she reviewed submissions of the parties, verified the contents of the district court record, wrote comprehensive bench memoranda containing detailed research and analysis of the issues, and assisted in drafting opinions. Before attending law school, Karen was a teacher in the Minneapolis and St. Paul public schools, and worked in social services, providing day treatment and habilitation services to adults with developmental and mental illness.
Karen has particular interest in the areas of search and seizure and appellate practice. She aggressively defends clients' constitutional rights, but also believes clients are entitled to an honest assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of their cases so they can make educated decisions on how they want their cases handled.
