Tribal Affiliation & Language: Mr. McLaughlin is fluent in Navajo and a member of the Navajo Nation.
Education: Mr. McLaughlin received his Juris Doctorate and a Natural Resources Law Certificate from the University of New Mexico School of Law (UNMSOL) in 2007. While in law school, he was the Coordinating and Processing Editor of Natural Resources Journal, an active member of the National Native American Law Student’s Association (NNALSA), and participant in the Southwest Indian Law Clinic. He was the recipient of a Dean’s Award and Honors in Clinical Law. He was also a Teaching Assistant for the American Indian Law Center, Pre-Law Sumer Institute (PLSI) for American Indians in 2005. The following year he was selected as a Summer Honors Law Clerk, with the Office of General Counsel for the United States Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C.
Prior Legal Experience: Before joining the Nordhaus Law Firm, Mr. McLaughlin was a United States Department of Justice (USDOJ) Honors Trial Attorney. At USDOJ, he was placed in the Indian Resources Section of the Environment and Natural Resources Division, where he represented the United States acting in its trust capacity on behalf of Indian tribes on issues relating to Indian water rights, Indian treaty rights, jurisdictional claims, and cultural patrimony repatriation. Prior to working at USDOJ, Mr. McLaughlin was an Attorney-Advisor for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of General Counsel (OGC) in Washington, D.C., where he was selected to work with the chief legal advisor to the U.S. EPA. At EPA OGC he worked on environmental issues affecting Indian tribes and members as well as international environmental law.
Professional Activities: Mr. McLaughlin has also been an active member of the Native American Bar Association, particularly the Native American Bar Association of Washington D.C. (NABA-DC). Most recently he served as the President of NABA-DC.
