Daniel D. McGee is a partner of Barrett McGee, LLP.  Dedicated to the proposition that knowledge is power, Mr. McGee is a keen civil litigator with an extensive and well-rounded understanding of the law.  This provides Mr. McGee with a unique ability to practice in several substantive areas, from the perspective of both plaintiffs and defendants. 

Over the years, Mr. McGee has gained invaluable experience representing clients in diverse “high stakes” matters involving professional liability, business law, commercial law, class actions, real property rights, intellectual property rights, bankruptcy, dental malpractice and family law, to name but a few.  Mr. McGee knows the “ins and outs” of California’s Code of Civil Procedure and Evidence Code, and enjoys an extensive knowledge of California’s “anti-SLAPP” statute and California’s Civil Code section 47(b)(2) litigation privilege.  This knowledge has given Mr. McGee the skill to gain the upper hand in litigation time and time again, and to put a quick end to meritless lawsuits.

Mr. McGee is also an experienced appellate practitioner, and renders general advice in many of the substantive areas mentioned above.  In 2009, 2010, and then 2011, Mr. McGee was nominated by his peers for inclusion into the Northern California Super Lawyers Magazine ™as a “Northern California Rising Star.” (The Super Lawyers Magazine is published by San Francisco Law and Politics.) 

Prior to the start-up of Barrett McGee, Mr. McGee was the principal of his own successful law firm, the Law Offices of Daniel D. McGee.  Before that, Mr. McGee was a named partner of Ellis LaVoie Poirier Steinheimer & McGee, LLP, a boutique trial firm based in Sacramento, California.  At Ellis LaVoie, Mr. McGee focused on litigation and complex litigation in matters involving professional malpractice defense, consumer class actions, business and commercial law, real property rights and intellectual property rights.  Mr. McGee would also render advice in matters involving professional responsibility, intellectual property rights and business law.  From 2006 to 2008, Mr. McGee was an associate of Ellis LaVoie’s predecessor, Ellis Coleman Poirier LaVoie & Steinheimer, LLP.

From 2004 to 2006, Mr. McGee practiced with Wanland & Spaulding (formerly, Wanland & Bernstein), a firm specializing in business and real estate litigation.  Mr. McGee represented both plaintiffs and defendants in trial and appellate courts as well as in arbitrations.

From 2002 to 2004, Mr. McGee practiced in the Law Offices of Edwin J. Zinman, PC, a San Francisco boutique law firm representing plaintiffs in dental malpractice matters.  From 2000 to 2002, Mr. McGee also clerked for Dr. Zinman’s law firm while attending law school and studying for the California Bar Exam, which he passed on the first attempt. 

From 1999 to 2000, Mr. McGee interned with the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office as a certified law student.  It was then that Mr. McGee gained his first courtroom experience.

Mr. McGee is a member of the California State Bar and admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts of California’s Central, Eastern, Northern and Southern Districts.

Personal

Mr. McGee was born and raised in Northern Illinois.  He moved to San Francisco in 1998 to attend law school.  In 2004, Mr. McGee relocated to Sacramento with his growing family.  He continues to reside in Sacramento – his adopted hometown – with his wife and their sons.  Mr. McGee is a lover of literature and history, and an avid musician, who plays guitar and piano.  He also enjoys outdoor activities such as jogging, biking, swimming, kayaking, hiking and camping.
