McLaughlin, Alison E.

Karen M. McGovern obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at the University of Northern Colorado in 1989. She practiced as a registered nurse for over 10 years before obtaining her law degree at the University of Denver College of Law in 2000.

Ms. McGovern refined her trial skills as a Colorado Deputy State Public Defender. For over five years, Ms. McGovern defended hundreds of criminal cases ranging from misdemeanors to serial sexual assaults and homicides, taking over 60 cases to jury trial. During this time, Ms. McGovern received extensive DNA training and defended numerous cases involving DNA evidence.

Ms. McGovern next served as an Assistant Attorney General, representing the Colorado Board of Medical Examiners, the Colorado Podiatry Board, the Colorado Board of Dental Examiners and the Colorado Board of Nursing. Ms. McGovern represented each of these agencies in disciplinary, licensing and injunctive actions in administrative, district and appellate courts.

Ms. McGovern has also worked as corporate counsel for a Colorado health care company.
