Since 1979, Dan McDermott has handled all types of civil litigation including cargo recovery matters, maritime personal injury cases and complex insurance litigation. Together with Patrick J. Foley and Thomas P. Parry, Dan handled the liquidation of all the Syndicates in the New York Insurance Exchange and represented the New York Security Fund in winding up the Exchange in the New York Supreme Court with approval by the Superintendent of Insurance.
In addition to his litigation skills, Dan has been very active in the maritime and marine insurance field. Dan has been a Director of the Marine & Insurance Claims Association for 25 years and has been its only President since it was incorporated in 1991. He has also been active in the Maritime Law Association and is presently Chair of the Uniformity of U.S. Laws Committee. Dan has written two Amicus Curiae Briefs to the United States Supreme Court on behalf of the MLA. He is also a member of the Nominating Committee which selects the Board and Officers of the Association.
Dan is recognized in Chambers USA, 2010 as a leading lawyer in shipping litigation. From 2008 to the present, Dan has attained the distinction of being identified by his peers as a New York Super Lawyer. He has also been named to Best Lawyers in America® for 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.
After graduating from New York Law School in 1975, Dan became a Hearing Officer for the New York City Conciliation & Appeals Board handling disputes between landlords and tenants under the Rent Stabilization Law. Dan then went on to work as a Court Attorney in the New York State Supreme Court, New York County. Dan wrote decisions on motions submitted to various judges involving myriad of civil lawsuits.
Dan has been active in the affairs of his Alma Mater, New York Law School and has acted as Maritime Mentor to several law students interested in the maritime field of law. He has sat as a Judge in New York Law School's National Moot Court Competition and has participated in International Law Day at the school, advising students about the practice of maritime law.
