Karin is Of Counsel in the firm of Briggs and Morgan, Professional Association. She is based in our Minneapolis office and is a member and former head of the Labor and Employment Section. Karin practices principally in the areas of:
Following two years in private practice, Karin spent eight years as an in-house attorney with what is now Target Corporation. She served as general counsel for B. Dalton Booksellers for three years before joining Briggs.
In 1984, Karin was a founder and co-chair of the first Employment Law Institute. The program, now renamed the Upper Midwest Employment Law Institute, has become the largest employment law conference in the country. Karin has continued to be a planner and faculty member at the institute since its inception.
Her practice at Briggs continues the focus on prevention, counseling and training she developed during her years as in-house counsel. Karin regularly counsels employers on issues such as reasonable accommodation, leaves of absence, discipline and discharge, discrimination, and litigation prevention and assessment. She has represented employers in discrimination charges and has done extensive training for managers and employees on a variety of issues.
In the higher education area, Karin represents academic institutions in employment, student issues and related matters. She has worked collaboratively with students, faculty and staff to develop policies that are supported by the entire college community.
Karin is listed in The Best Lawyers in America and has been selected as a "Leading American Attorney." She has also been designated a "Super Lawyer" by Minnesota Law & Politics. She has also been named to the Chambers USA list of America's Leading Business Lawyers.
Karin received her B.A. summa cum laude from Macalester College and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She received her law degree cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1974. Karin joined Briggs in 1987.
