Katharine Maddox has experience in all areas of family law, including division of marital property, spousal and child support, custody and visitation, relocation of children as it relates to custody and visitation, and appeals to the Virginia Court of Appeals. In custody matters Katharine focuses on what is best for the children and she understands that absent unusual circumstances children need both parents in their lives. As part of her practice in domestic relations law, she has worked on many international family law cases with clients from multiple countries. While Katharine regularly litigates matters and works to settle cases prior to trial, she is also trained in Collaborative law which can benefit many families through the emphasis on privacy and removing the "threat" of litigation from the settlement process.
In December 2011, Ms. Maddox was selected by Northern Virginia Magazine as one of the top lawyers in the area. Specifically, she was 1 of fewer than 20 attorneys listed as a top lawyer in each of the following areas: Custody, Family Law and Visitation Rights. She was also featured in a profile titled "Making the Case for Custody" which can be found here: http://www.northernvirginiamag.com/education/education-features/2011/12/28/family-and-all-it-entails-frozen-embryos-and-furry-friends/.
In 2010, 2011 and 2012, Katharine was selected as a Rising Star in the Super Lawyer & Rising Star Section of the Super Lawyers publication. The Super Lawyers website states as follows: Super Lawyers magazine names attorneys in each state who received the highest point totals, as chosen by their peers and through the independent research. Rising Stars names the state's top up-and-coming attorneys.
Katharine has lectured on family law issues to the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (IAML) as well as to the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association (VTLA). Most recently in the spring of 2012, Ms. Maddox lectured throughout the state of Virginia for the VTLA on evidentiary issues with respect to family law cases. The purpose of the seminar was to educate attorneys throughout Virginia on the new Rules of Evidence codified in 2012.
Ms. Maddox is one of the youngest Fellows of the IAML (http://www.iaml.org/). Prior to seeking admission, an attorney must be in practice for a minimum of 10 years and have at least 5 years of international family law experience and be recommended by other Fellows of the organization.
Katharine has written articles for the Journal of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, the "Family Law Corner" for the Virginia State Bar Docket Call publication and the IAML international newsletter. Most recently, Katharine and her law partner, Julie Gerock, co-authored the Virginia chapter in the European Lawyer Reference Series: Jurisdictional Comparisons edited by James Stewart of Manches LLP (a law firm located in London, England).
In 2006 Katharine moved to Rome, Italy for 16 months, continuing to work part time assisting with appeals, specifically drafting briefs for submission to the Virginia Court of Appeals. Prior to her move to Italy, Ms. Maddox wrote an article on child relocation in Virginia which was published by the VTLA. The article is located here:
