Angus M. Lawton is a graduate of Duke University and the University of South Carolina School of Law. He has been practicing in South Carolina since 1988.
Mr. Lawton has been certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy (“NBTA”). To become certified, candidates have to take a written exam on trial practice, evidence, and ethics; show proof of over 45 days in actual trial; submit examples of written memoranda filed with the court; and provide references from judges and attorneys.
Mr. Lawton is a also member of the Million Dollar Advocate’s Forum and the Multi Million Dollar Advocate’s Forum. In addition, he was selected for inclusion in 2011 South Carolina Super Lawyers. He is a South Carolina board certified civil mediator and arbitrator. He also serves on the Professional Responsibility Committee of the South Carolina Bar Association.
Mr. Lawton comes from a family of attorneys. His maternal grandfather, Angus Hamilton Macaulay, practiced law in Chester, South Carolina for over 40 years. Mr. Lawton's father was Thomas Oregon Lawton, Jr., an attorney who practiced in Allendale, South Carolina for 35 years. His mother, Bess Macaulay Lawton, was an Allendale County educator, and she served on the Allendale County and South Carolina school boards for many years. Mr. Lawton has two siblings: Thomas Oregon Lawton, III, an attorney in Asheville, North Carolina, and Margaret Macaulay Lawton, a dean at the Charleston School of Law in Charleston, South Carolina.
