Wendy Haller Verlander is a partner in the firm's Intellectual Property Department, and a member of the Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group. She joined the firm in 2001.

Practice

Ms. Verlander has extensive experience in all aspects of IP litigation, including federal district court and appellate disputes, and International Trade Commission (ITC) actions. She is experienced in arbitration, domestic and foreign patent procurement, reexamination proceedings, drafting opinions of counsel, technology transfer and licensing and due diligence investigations for corporate transactions.

Ms. Verlander counsels clients in various technologies including electronics, optoelectronics and semiconductor manufacturing; electromechanical, MEMs, mechanical and medical devices; wireless communications technology and standards; life science applications and tools; microfluidics; television transmission systems and standards; engine systems and design; and methods of doing business.

Ms. Verlander received a JD from the Columbia University School of Law, where she was president of the Society for Law, Science and Technology, as well as a three-year Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. She received both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While at MIT, Ms. Verlander was a member of the engineering honor society and president of the MIT chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

  • Represents a large wireless communications company in a 14 patent suit in the Central District of California.
  • Obtained a successful settlement for a large electronics company in a patent dispute concerning MRI technology in the Central District of California.
  • Obtained a successful settlement of an eight patent infringement suit in the District of Massachusetts concerning control systems for LED technology.
  • Represented a network management company in a patent dispute in the Eastern District of Texas concerning graphical user interface technology.
  • Obtained a successful settlement of a patent dispute in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania concerning digital medical records.
  • Represented a medical device company in a patent dispute in the Northern District of California concerning angioplasty catheter technology.
  • Obtained a successful settlement of a patent dispute in the District of Massachusetts for a medical device company concerning cytological imaging systems.
  • Obtained a successful settlement of a patent dispute in the Eastern District of Texas concerning standards-essential patents for HDTV technology.
  • Successfully defended a small photolithography company against a large electronics company in a seven patent infringement suit in the ITC.
  • Obtained a unanimous decision of a three-arbitrator panel in a patent dispute concerning cutting-edge tunable laser technology important to the telecommunications industry.
  • Obtained a successful appellate decision from the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in a patent dispute concerning interactive programming guides.
  • Successfully defended a mass spectrometry company in a patent dispute in the ITC.

Professional Activities

Ms. Verlander is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the state of New York and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. She is also admitted to practice before the United States Courts of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the First Circuit, as well as the United States District Courts for the District of Massachusetts, the Northern, Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, the Northern District of California and the Eastern District of Texas. She is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Boston Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), the Boston Patent Law Association (BPLA), and the New York Intellectual Property Law Association (NYIPLA).
