Joseph Treloar is an associate at Frommer Lawrence & Hauge LLP. Joseph’s practice encompasses all aspects of intellectual property, including patent prosecution, litigation, patent infringement opinions, validity and freedom-to-operate opinions, and client counseling on intellectual property maters.

Throughout his career, Joseph has handled complex intellectual property litigation concerning both patent and trademark claims. Joseph also worked as part of a team of attorneys from various law firms across the country to draft model jury instructions for copyright law for an American Bar Association book entitled “Model Jury Instructions: Copyright, Trademark and Trade Dress Litigation”, published May 2008. He is listed as a coauthor of the portion pertaining to copyright law.

Joseph’s practice also encompasses various aspects of IP transactional work, including trademark licensing agreements and patent prosecution. Joseph’s experience in the area of patent prosecution is extensive, including filing several appeals, to and conducing an oral hearing before, the USPTO Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. This aspect of his practice covers a broad range of technologies, including:

• biotechnology (e.g., nucleic acids and proteins as they relate to HIV treatment);
• chemistry (e.g., chemical compositions of inks; carbon nanotubes; quantum dot optoelectronic devices);
• optics (e.g., chemical and optical characteristics of lenses; microscopy)
• mechanical arts (e.g., physical closure devices; motors for use in electronics; physical print head and printer design);
• electronics (e.g., electrical printhead and printer design); and
• computers (e.g., wireless connection to computer networks).

Joseph has also counseled indigent clients as part of a pro bono Elder Law Clinic.

Prior to joining Frommer Lawrence and Haug, Joseph was an associate at Reed Smith LLP for over 5 years.

Joseph received his JD from New York University School of Law. He also received a BS in Chemical Engineering from Rutgers University School of Engineering. While there, Joseph conducted his James J. Slade Scholar thesis on 137Cs sorption in Savannah River Site soils.
