Rodney Tow has nearly 30 years of legal expertise and is one of a select few Texas attorneys that is Board Certified in both Consumer Bankruptcy Law and Business Bankruptcy Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Rodney is a certified Mediator, for Bankruptcy and Commercial matters.

Rodney was honored two years in a row by being named a Texas Super Lawyer in 2003 and 2004. Rodney is a distinguished guest speaker at many state-wide Bankruptcy Law seminars and training classes.

Rodney Tow and Julie Koenig founded Tow & Koenig in 2001, a boutique law firm dedicated to all Bankruptcy Law matters.

Rodney is licensed in the State of Texas and in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas. Rodney is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees, the Houston Bar Association, the Montgomery County Bar Association and The Woodlands Bar Association.

Rodney practices Bankruptcy Law in Harris, Montgomery and Walker Counties in Texas. He initially started as a general law practitioner, handling civil and criminal matters. However, Rodney quickly developed a bankruptcy practice, which flourished.

Rodney was admitted to the State Bar of Texas on May 11, 1984, received a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston School of Law on May 12, 1984 and graduated from the University of Texas in May of 1978 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.

In 1992 Rodney became a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Trustee. As a Trustee, Rodney oversees hundreds of bankruptcy cases each year and administers the bankruptcy estates in order to recover assets and pay creditors. Rodney successfully argued In re Zibman 268 F.3d 298 (5th Cir. 2001) which addressed exemptions relating to proceeds from the sale of homesteads in Texas. Rodney has served as a Chapter 7 panel trustee for the Southern District of Texas since October 1992 and has served as a Chapter 11 trustee and as a Chapter 11 plan distribution trustee.

Rodney was born and raised in Conroe, Texas. Rodney began his career by serving his community and was elected to represent Montgomery County in the Texas Legislature from 1981 through 1984. He was then appointed by Governor Mark White to serve as a Commissioner of the Texas Health Facilities. Rodney also served on the Board of Directors for Montgomery County Crime Stoppers.

Rodney is outdoor enthusiasts and enjoys boating, scuba diving, fly fishing, kayaking and wood working. Rodney has been married to Linda Tow for 33 years, and they have two children; Lauren, who is an attorney in Miami, and Christopher who works for Facebook in San Francisco.
 

Board Certification

Rodney is one of a select few Texas attorneys to achieve Board Certification in Consumer Bankruptcy Law and Business Bankruptcy Law. In fact, Rodney is one of only 152 Texas attorney’s to become Board Certified in Business Bankruptcy and one of only 143 Texas attorney’s to become Board Certified in Consumer Bankruptcy Law.

Rodney is in an elite group, as only .1% of ALL Texas attorneys have received Board Certification in Consumer Bankruptcy Law and Business Bankruptcy Law.

Board Certified Attorney?

A Board Certified Attorney is an attorney who has demonstrated special competence in a particular field in which the Texas Board of Legal Specialization has certified his/her competence.

The Texas Board of Legal Specialization was created by the Supreme Court of Texas and the Board Members are appointed by the President of the State Bar of Texas. The Board, in turn, administers the program through which an attorney demonstrates their special competence in a particular area of law.

A lawyer who is Board Certified in Consumer Bankruptcy Law and Business Bankruptcy Law must have experience in the trial of serious bankruptcy matters and the preparation of such cases for trial. They must have extensive knowledge of state and federal constitutional law, evidence, procedure, and laws involved in the trial of bankruptcy cases.

  • Certified Business Bankruptcy Law specialists can represent business debtors and creditors in all areas which involve the Bankruptcy Code and other aspects of debtor/creditor relations.
  • Certified Consumer Bankruptcy Law specialists can represent non-business debtors and creditors in all areas of bankruptcy including debtor/creditor relations affected by bankruptcy and debt adjustment.

The requirements for an attorney to receive Board Certification in Consumer Bankruptcy Law and Business Bankruptcy Law include:

  • Handling a wide variety of bankruptcy matters to demonstrate experience and involvement.
  • Attending bankruptcy law continuing legal education seminars regularly to keep their legal training up to date.
  • Being evaluated by fellow lawyers and judges.
  • Passing a day-long written examination.

Certification is for a period of 5 years. To remain certified after that time, every 5 years the attorney must apply for re-certification and meet the requirements for continued experience, peer review, and continuing legal education.
