Hugh B. Thomas concentrates in the areas of environmental law and litigation. He has over twenty-five years of experience in all aspects of environmental legal matters, including property contamination, permitting, regulatory violations, waste disposal, public hearings, compliance audits and transaction due diligence. Prior to joining Berry Moorman in 1989, he was in-house counsel at Waste Management, Inc., Caterpillar Tractor Company, Outboard Marine Corporation and Borg-Warner Corporation.
In addition to regularly counseling numerous large and small private companies, he has represented government entities and public institutions and has drafted federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations. He has also had leadership roles in various business and legal organizations, including the Illinois State Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers, the Construction Industry Manufacturers Association, the Greater Detroit Chamber of Commerce and the Michigan State Bar Association.
Mr. Thomas has also participated as a speaker or panelist in numerous environmental conferences and chaired several major conferences, including the widely attended Negotiating Environmental Issues conferences co-sponsored by the Detroit Bar Association and the Greater Detroit Chamber of Commerce. He has also lectured at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
He has worked extensively on legal matters before the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, the Michigan Attorney General's Office and the United Stated Environmental Protection Agency and has been involved in environmental litigation at all levels of the state and federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.
Mr. Thomas is admitted to the Bars of the States of Michigan and Illinois.
