Tony Stewart served as Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day's Hong Kong Office from 1992 to 2000 and as the first Chief Representative of Jones Day's Shanghai Office. Since his return to the Firm's Dallas Office, he has maintained an emphasis on inbound and outbound Asia-related transactions, as well as distressed M&A and corporate restructuring transactions and public company transactional and compliance matters. He travels regularly in the Asia Pacific region, working with all of Jones Day's Asia Pacific offices, and has written and spoken on a variety of legal topics. Representative clients in recent matters include 7-Eleven, Allied Riser Communications Corporation, Amway Asia Pacific, Hotels.com, Kaiser Aluminum Corporation, Roly International Holdings, and UICI.
Geographically, although Tony's practice has been most active in the People's Republic of China and Hong Kong, his experience includes transactions in Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and other jurisdictions.
Currently Tony serves on the China Task Force, the International Business Advisory Council, and the International Public Affairs Committee of the Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce. Previously, during Tony's tenure as Partner-in-Charge in Hong Kong, he became the first U.S. lawyer to be licensed to practice as a Hong Kong solicitor, and Jones Day was the first U.S. law firm to be authorized to practice Hong Kong law. Tony served on the board of governors of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and as chairman of its Legal Committee. In addition, he was the first American lawyer to serve on the two committees of the Law Society of Hong Kong responsible for regulating the practice of foreign lawyers and interpretation and application of the statutes and regulations governing legal practice in Hong Kong. He was also the first to be appointed to the editorial board of the Law Society's official journal, The Hong Kong Lawyer.
Tony served as head of the Jones Day Hong Kong Office's China investment practice from 1992 to 2000 and in 1999 he also became the first Chief Representative of Jones Day's Shanghai Office. His Hong Kong experience covers a wide range of U.S., Hong Kong, China-related, and other international corporate transactions. These include foreign direct investment and technology transfers, cross-border acquisitions and dispositions of corporate assets and securities, formation and operation of joint ventures and investment funds, stock exchange listings, and venture capital and other financing transactions.
Tony began his law practice in New York and joined Jones Day's Dallas Office in 1984, where he practiced until beginning his Hong Kong assignment.
Tony is a member of the American Bar Association, the Law Society of Hong Kong, the New York State Bar Association, and the State Bar of Texas.
