Nate St. Clair has a diverse intellectual property practice. He counsels clients in a wide range of intellectual property matters, with a particular emphasis on IP litigation, IP licensing and portfolio management, infringement investigations, patentability studies, product analyses, risk assessments, and general IP counseling, particularly in the electrical and mechanical arts. His experience also includes counseling clients regarding patent and trademark procurement before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and in providing strategic counsel to clients regarding sports and entertainment law matters.
Nate has counseled clients on numerous technology areas, including automotive and consumer electronics, avionics, computing devices, data networks, digital imaging, electromagnetics, financial services products, medical devices, optics, power distribution, semiconductor devices, signal processing, software, telecommunications, and wireless devices.
Nate is active in community service and pro bono work. For more than three years, he has volunteered his time with urban youth centers and with the Big Brothers & Big Sisters organization. Most recently, he has counseled pro bono clients on issues ranging from copyright and trademark infringement to defamation and rights of publicity matters. He also has worked with several first-time film directors in drafting nondisclosure and release agreements in various sectors of the film industry.
Nate is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA) and its Litigation and Intellectual Property Sections, the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), the Illinois State Bar, the Wisconsin State Bar (WISBAR), the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the National Bar Association (NBA), the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), and the Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyers Association (BESLA).
Prior to joining Jones Day, Nate was an associate in the IP litigation practices at Foley and Lardner in Chicago and Milwaukee and at Baker Botts in Dallas, where he worked in the areas of patent litigation, patent prosecution, technology licensing, and sports/entertainment. Nate also worked as a patent engineer for GE Healthcare for several years and as a law clerk for the general counsel and vice president of the Milwaukee Bucks NBA franchise.
While an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan, Nate worked as a research associate for the National Science Foundation and coauthored a data networking study entitled Identifying Where Technology Logging and Monitoring for Increased Security End and Violations of Personal Privacy and Student Records Begin. Nate also worked at Lucent Technologies and GE Transportation Systems on design projects for new and existing telecommunications and control system technologies.
