Deborah Sloan's litigation experience is diverse, ranging from suits involving innovative challenges to e-commerce business models to trademark and copyright intellectual property disputes. Her cases include large, complex, multidistrict litigation and single party business disputes. Deborah has defended and prosecuted claims in federal and state district and appellate courts, in arbitrations, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Currently, Deborah leads the defense of Expedia in 60+ individual cases and class actions brought by tax authorities seeking to retroactively extend local and state hotel taxes traditionally imposed only on hotels to online travel companies facilitating hotel reservations. Other national coordinating counsel engagements have included serving on the team coordinating a global retailer's defense of wage/hour class actions and defending tobacco companies in suits brought by state attorneys general. Deborah's single party lawsuits include representing NTR Metals in a state court lawsuit brought by NTR to enforce a mutual release and settlement agreement and other business contract disputes.
Deborah's intellectual property experience includes successfully defending Ball Corporation in a 24-day patent licensing dispute resulting in an award on Ball's counterclaims and the recovery of attorneys' fees; successfully defending copyright infringement claims brought against a small business by the estate of a former employee and securing attorneys' fees; and prosecuting and defending infringement claims involving magazine titles and web site urls.
Deborah has also devoted time to pro bono engagements, including assisting a homeowner reclaim title to a family home swindled away from an elderly grandmother.
