Mr. Schmieder has practiced civil litigation since 1996. He concentrates his practice in class actions and other complex litigation, including insurance coverage, product liability and commercial disputes. He also handles mass tort and personal injury matters. Mr. Schmieder presently chairs the Complex Litigation practice group at SLChapman LLC, LLC. Mr. Schmieder has tried cases to verdict, argued appeals, handled bench trials, arbitrations, and evidentiary proceedings in a multitude of jurisdictions. He practices in both state and federal court, including before the United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (MDL Panel). Mr. Schmieder has exclusively represented plaintiffs since 2005, and has recovered more than $150 million for clients and class members. Mr. Schmieder was recognized in the 2009 Illinois Super Lawyers . Until the Spring of 2005, Mr. Schmieder was a partner at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP, a multi-office international law firm.
He has authored Warning: Sellers May Now Have a Post-Sale Duty to Warn, 50 FICC Quarterly 533 (2000); Stuck on the Tracks: The FELA Engine vs. The Ethical Caboose, 20 S. Ill. U.L.J. 331 (1996) (Best Comment Award); and Workers' Compensation and Contribution in Illinois: Punching a Hole in the Kotecki Ceiling, 20 S. Ill. U.L.J. 651 (1996). In law school, he was a member of the Southern Illinois University Law Journal Board of Editors, the Order of Barristers, and the National Health Law Moot Court team.
