CURT GWATHNEY is a Partner in the Corporate, Tax and Finance Section of Balch & Bingham LLP, where his practice is primarily devoted to public finance matters. Mr. Gwathney serves in the roles of bond counsel, underwriter's counsel and disclosure counsel in taxable and tax-exempt financings, representing the State of Alabama and various state authorities, county governments, municipal governments, boards of education, utilities boards and other public bodies. Mr. Gwathney also serves as counsel to banks in public finance transactions and to private businesses in matters relating to taxable and tax-exempt financings.
Among other transactions, Mr. Gwathney has served as bond counsel to the Jefferson County Board of Education and the Madison County Board of Education, two of the largest school systems in the State of Alabama; bond counsel to the City of Montgomery in connection with the financing of Montgomery's Riverfront Stadium, home of Montgomery's AA minor league baseball team; disclosure counsel to Alabama Drinking Water Finance Authority and Alabama Water Pollution Control Authority in connection with revolving fund loan programs to finance water and sewer projects throughout the State of Alabama.
Mr. Gwathney has also served as counsel to boards of education with respect to elections regarding tax levies, the formation of new school systems and other finance-related matters.
Mr. Gwathney is a member of the National Association of Bond Lawyers ("NABL") and is Co-Chairman of the NABL Associates Network. Mr. Gwathney has served as a faculty member for the NABL Fundamentals of Municipal Bond Law seminar since 2006.
Prior to practicing law, Mr. Gwathney worked for five years as an instructor in the Department of Economics at the University of Virginia.
