As a law student at St. John's University, he won the Sporacio Trial Competition as the best advocate at the law school. He went on to represent St. John's in the National Trial Competition defeating such prestigious Law Schools as Yale and NYU.After St. John's Law School, Milt Grunwald went to the Nassau County District Attorney's Office in Mineola, New York. He served with distinction in his three years in the Office of Denis Dillon rising through the ranks to the County Court Trial Bureau and serving as the Chief of the Mental Health Unit. As a prosecutor Milt Grunwald worked in felony screening and in the Grand Jury. He presented the direct evidence in grand jury presentments and at hearings such as Dunaway, Wade, Huntley, Mapp, Gomberg and Sandoval. He understood the art of presenting evidence in the simplest and most understandable form. He developed cross-examination techniques that exposed the witness for what they truly were many were not simply mistaken. As a result of his experience he has learned the language of the science involved in ballistics, fingerprints, blood serology and forensic pathology
In 1988, Milt Grunwald formed the law firm of Grunwald & Seman with Karl Chip Seman his partner in the DA's office. They embarked on a legal career that provides hard nosed, relentless and successful representation of their clients.
In over twenty four years of practice, Milt Grunwald has defended men and woman accused of murder, manslaughter, robbery, burglary, drug possession, drug sale, forgery, possession of forged instruments, commercial fraud, drunk driving, driving under the influence of drugs, drunk driving by refusal, license revocations, assault, endangering the welfare of a child, internet crimes, assault, criminal mischief, menacing, harassment, aggravated harassment, sexual abuse, rape, larceny and state liquor law violations.
As Nassau County, with the election of Kathleen Rice, has focused on the harsh prosecution of drunk driving cases the firm has emphasized the defense of such matters. Their expertise has become critical when reviewing breathalyzer logs, equipment logs, field sobriety performance tests, video taped refusal tests and the impact of controlled substances on the motorist. As a consequence of handling such drunk driving cases, Milt Grunwald has also worked hard and mastered the issues involved in the area of civil forfeiture of cars for those individuals arrested for drunk driving.In addition, Milt Grunwald has handled and developed an expert niche in trying complex commercial litigation including partnership and corporate dissolutions. The cases have covered industries such as real estate companies, architectural firms, the lighting and construction industry, insurance companies, fire extinguisher companies and the auto industry. The cases have litigated issues with tens of millions of dollars at stake.
A graduate of the NYU Graduate School of Public Administration Milt Grunwald worked for two years as a hospital administrator at the Bronx Municipal Center [Jacobi Hospital]. His relationship with doctors, nurses, hospital administrators, physical therapists and chiropractors lead to the development of a practice which includes the commercial and civil concerns of professionals in the health care field. His litigation practice and the skills developed as a trial attorney have provided his clients with the necessary edge to present their case in the most favorable light. And, his criminal defense background has served those practitioners well when faced with disciplinary action by the Department of Education, Board of Health and Office of Professional Medical Conduct.
In 2003 Milt Grunwald was elected the Village Justice of Roslyn the Village he has lived in for over twenty years. He hears all types of building matters and traffic cases. He has presided over trials involving the most common issues such as speeding to parking violations and as complex as landowner and municipal liability. See People v.
