Matt is a shareholder in the firm of Briggs and Morgan, Professional Association. He is based in our Minneapolis office and is a member of the Business Litigation Section. Matt also practices in the area of criminal defense.
Matt has represented businesses and individuals in a variety of civil, criminal and regulatory matters. In addition to the broad array of civil cases that he has handled, Matt has obtained acquittals for clients in federal and state trials, and has counseled corporate clients responding to criminal investigations across the United States. Matt has also provided representation to employers in labor arbitrations. In his practice, matters have included allegations of civil and criminal securities fraud, political corruption, environmental violations, export violations, federal grant fraud, Medicare fraud, ERISA violations, tax evasion, mail and wire fraud, money laundering, and many other complex civil claims and white collar crimes.
Matt is a former chair of the firm's pro bono committee. He has also devoted considerable time to providing pro bono representation to the Center for Victims of Torture and indigent defendants in his capacity as an appointed member of the Federal Public Defender's conflicts panel.
Matt has been admitted to practice in all Minnesota courts since 1994, also practicing before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th and 8th Circuits. Matt was named a "Super Lawyer" by Minnesota Law & Politics.
Matt received his B.A. with distinction in political science and history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his law degree cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School. Matt joined Briggs in 2000.
