John is a shareholder and practices in the Oil, Gas, and Energy Resources Section. He is licensed to practice law in both Texas and Oklahoma, and is Board Certified in Oil, Gas and Mineral Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
AREAS OF CONCENTRATION
Title Examination and Transactional Work
John spends most of his time examining oil and gas titles, rendering title opinions, and drafting the many documents used by the oil and gas industry. Title opinions may be based on abstract examination or done by "stand-up" examination in the county clerks office. Document preparation includes deeds, leases, assignments, joint operating agreements, purchase and sale agreements, seismic option agreements, gas purchase contracts, easements, and many other hybrid documents a client may need in order to explore for, develop and market oil and gas.
Oil and Gas Litigation
John frequently works with members of the firms Litigation Section when oil and gas matters are involved in lawsuits.
PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
John spent over 14 years as a landman with Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) in various positions in ARCO offices in Midland, Tulsa, Denver, and Lafayette. His last position with ARCOs Midland office was as Director of Asset Acquisition and Divestiture. Prior to joining the firm, John was a sole practitioner in Midland, practicing mainly in the area of oil and gas title examination and transactional matters.
