Champion has been practicing law for twenty-four years.  The first eleven years of his legal career was as an assistant district attorney for the State of North Carolina.  After graduating from North Carolina Central School of Law in 1984 he began working as an assistant district attorney in the 2nd Judicial District in North Carolina.  That district included Beaufort, Martin, Hyde, Washington and Terrell Counties.  As an assistant district attorney for that district he handled all types of traffic offenses and misdemeanor crimes from child support to assault with a deadly weapon.  In 1987 Mr. Champion moved his family to Alamance County to become an assistant district attorney in Judicial District 15A which consists of Alamance County.  Again there he worked for the Honorable Steve A. Balog and handled everything from speeding tickets to first-degree murder cases.  As an assistant district attorney he took lead prosecution roles in several first-degree murder cases involving the death penalty and for approximately eight years he was the lead prosecutor in all child abuse and sexual assault cases that were prosecuted.

 In 1996 Mr. Champion joined the law firm of Hemric & Lambeth, P.A.  He gained a great deal of experience under the tutelage of H. Clay Hemric, Sr., H. Clay Hemric, Jr., Nancy G. Hemric, and the now Judge D. Thomas Lambeth, Jr. and W. Phillip Moseley.  Since 1996 Mr. Champion has concentrated his practice in criminal defense and personal injury.  In 2004 Mr. Champion earned the distinction of being a Board Certified Specialist in Criminal Law.  When Mr. Champion is hired to handle a case for you, you can be assured that he will be open with you about your case from the beginning until it is concluded.  Having been a State Prosecutor for eleven years, he certainly knows how the Criminal Justice System works from the operation of the radar gun in a speeding case or the alcohol breath testing instrument in a driving while impaired case and how detectives, police officers and potential jurors view the strengths and weaknesses of particular cases. 

 Mr. Champion has also been active in the Alamance County Community.  He served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Rape Crisis Alliance, now Crossroads and the Alamance County Mental Health Association when he was in the District Attorney's office.  He has been a member of the Old Forest Racquet Club Board of Directors.  He has been an active member of the Burlington Civitan Club where he held offices as local president and also served as the North Carolina District East Judge Advocate for then Governor Collette Yetka.  He has been active in the YMCA Indian Guides and Princesses and held the job of Big Chief for that organization during the time that his daughter and son were members of that group.  He has been active in the local school system, most particularly in the Western Alamance High School Student Aid Association.

 His professional associations include the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys, the North Carolina Bar Association, North Carolina's Advocates for Justice, and the Alamance County Bar Association.

 Mr. Champion has attempted to keep abreast of new developments in the law by attending more than the minimum twelve hours of continuing legal education requirements and also to maintain his certification as a Board Certified Specialist in Criminal Law with the North Carolina State Bar.
