Maura Rezendes' practice focuses on complex commercial litigation involving foreign parties and international arbitration and trade counseling. Maura has litigated civil claims brought under RICO, the Anti-Terrorism Act, Torture Victims Protection Act, the Alien Tort Claims Act, and the Declaratory Judgment Act before several federal district courts as well as the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. Maura participated in two of the first NAFTA Chapter Eleven investor-state arbitrations against the United States (Loewen Group and Methanex Corp.), arbitrated under the ICSID additional facility rules and UNCITRAL rules, respectively. She also has counseled clients on compliance with U.S. trade controls, including economic sanctions programs administered by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) administered by the Bureau of Industry and Security, as well as the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Most recently, Maura has been litigating In re September 11, 2001 Attacks, with particular focus on issues of personal jurisdiction over foreign defendants under various state long-arm statutes as well as under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 4(k)(2) and federal common law and jurisdictional discovery. On the trade front, Maura assists in conducting internal investigations, helps companies establish compliance programs, assists in applying for and obtaining licenses to engage in covered activities, and drafts voluntary disclosures.

Maura's pro bono activities have included working with the Children's Law Center, a D.C.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to providing legal services to at-risk children and their families.
