Travis M. Reeds, 39, has been an attorney with the firm since 1995. His expertise is centered on criminal law defense and divorce. He has developed a unique system for case analysis and resolution in divorce cases, with an understanding of what issues necessarily need to be litigated, and what issues are customarily negotiated. Although willing to negotiate any reasonable agreement acceptable to his client, Mr. Reeds is also willing and able to litigate a divorce case when the situation necessitates such a course of action.
Criminal Law Defense. As a trial lawyer, Mr. Reeds has a reputation as an aggressive defense attorney, having tried many jury trials in major criminal law cases. As in almost every vocation, in order to effectively represent a defendant in a criminal law case, it is absolutely essential that the defense attorney have trial experience. This is true even in the event a case is settled prior to trial, because the attorney with considerable trial experience will have a better idea regarding possible outcomes in the event trial is necessary, and a better idea of what constitutes a “reasonable” case resolution prior to trial.
Mr. Reeds has recently been named “co-editor” of the ICLE publication entitled “Michigan Drunk Driving Law and Practice”, a highly regarded reference book used by almost all Michigan attorneys when dealing drunk driving cases. In addition, Mr. Reeds has recently co-authored another book entitled Michigan Criminal Procedure. This book deals with all crimes, including both felonies and misdemeanors, and the criminal procedure aspects of client representation.
Travis Reeds graduated from Wayne State University Law School, and joined the firm of Reeds & Reeds, in 1995. Since that time he has become one of the most respected trial attorneys anywhere. His analytical approach to the application of the U.S. Constitution and the Michigan Constitution in criminal law cases, is extraordinary and unparalleled.
Divorce and Family Law. Divorce cases present some of the most difficult problems in terms of case resolution. This is, in part, because of the emotional aspects associated with the termination of a marriage and difficulties inherent in making such a decision. Divorces involve not only the dissolution of the marriage, but often the determination of custody and parenting time for the minor children; it also involves the determination of what constitutes the marital estate, the division of marital debts and the distribution of the marital assets.
In handling divorce cases for the firm, Travis Reeds, Marguerite Hammerschmidt, and Timothy Stickradt have developed a unique system for case analysis and resolution which helps to identify those issues most crucial to the client, and the issues which must be settled initially in order to reach a settlement agreement. It is important to determine initially whether the divorce case is one which can be amicably resolved, or one which will require litigation. In determining what course of action is best, in any particular case, it is important that divorce counsel be familiar with the applicable case law and court rules, in order to effectively advise the client in a divorce case. Travis Reeds has considerable experience in the trials and resolution of divorce cases, and this experience is extremely important when advising clients involved in the critical decision-making associated with the dissolution of a marriage.
Mr. Reeds and Karen Reeds reside in South Lyon, Michigan with their two children and their dog, Winston.
