Cort has been practicing law in Florida since 1976, and since that time has been representing victims of automobile negligence, professional negligence, and other torts. Cort is Board Certified in Civil Trial Law by the Florida Bar, and is also one of only two attorneys in Charlotte County nationally certified in civil trial advocacy by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.
Cort is "AV Preeminent" rated by Martindale-Hubbell, and has been named a "Florida Super Lawyer" every year since 2006. Cort's extensive courtroom experience is highlighted by a wrongful death verdict he obtained on behalf of the parents and daughter of a young lady tragically killed in a tractor trailer accident. Following a two-week trial, the jury returned a verdict of $4,650,000.00, which still stands as the largest known civil jury verdict in the history of Charlotte County.
In addition to his professional obligations, Cort currently volunteers for two local not-for-profit institutions. He serves as Charlotte Campus Board Chairman for Edison State College Foundation, and as a board member for Charlotte Behavioral Health Care.
