Justin practices in the area of intellectual property law with an emphasis on patent litigation and patent prosecution. As a member of Jones Day's IP group, he has represented clients in matters involving a variety of technologies, including digital still cameras, mobile phones, semiconductor memory, and computer peripherals. Additionally, Justin has worked in antitrust litigation with Jones Day's trial practice, and he has assisted pro bono with appeals to the Board of Immigration Appeals at the U.S. Department of Justice.
Prior to joining Jones Day in 2006, Justin developed patent prosecution skills as a patent examiner for more than four years at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, and as a summer patent clerk in 2000 and 2001 at the IP boutique law firm, Ward & Olivo. As a patent examiner, Justin examined hundreds of patent applications in the technology area of multiplex communications. Examples of this technology include time division multiplexing (TDM), frequency division multiplexing (FDM), orthogonal and quasiorthogonal multiplexing techniques such as code division multiple access (CDMA), and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Representative fields include cellular communications, computer networks, and data routing.
Justin attended law school at night while working full-time as an IP legal intern at Jones Day and as a patent examiner. He has completed semester-length law courses in a wide variety of IP areas, including: patents, copyrights, trademarks and unfair competition, international protection of IP, information technology transactions, cyberlaw, entertainment law, IP pretrial litigation skills, and patent trial practice. In addition to his education in the U.S., Justin studied electronics engineering during a semester abroad at the University of Limerick, Ireland, and he has completed Franklin Pierce Law Center's e-Law Intellectual Property Summer Institute at University College Cork, Ireland.
