Ed Abes, a 1965 graduate of Pennsylvania State University, earned his J.D. from Duquesne University in 1969 where he was President of the Student Bar Association. After law school, Ed worked for the State Workers’ Insurance Fund. In 1978, he decided to use the experience he gained during the past nine years and opened his own firm to represent injured workers. Today, his over forty years of experience are focused solely on representing injured workers.
Ed represents injured professional athletes as a member of the Workers’ Compensation Panel of the National Football League Players Association, the National Hockey League Players Association and the Professional Hockey Players Association.
Ed sits on the Fee Dispute Committee and is a member of the Workers’ Compensation Section of the Allegheny County Bar Association; past chair of the Workers Compensation Section and a member of the Sports and Entertainment Law Committee of the Pennsylvania Bar Association. He now chairs the Pennsylvania Bar Association Workers’ Compensation Section Liaison Committee, which facilitates communication among the judges, administrators, and attorneys of the Workers’ Compensation judicial system. He was past Co-Chair of the Workers Compensation Section of the Pennsylvania Association for Justice; and a member of the Workers Injury Law and Advocacy Group. He is a Trustee of the Allegheny County Bar Foundation Loans and Scholarship Fund. Ed is past President of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and past Treasurer of the Allegheny County Democratic Committee.
In 2011, Ed was elected to the National Academy of Social Insurance. He has been listed as one of the top 5% of lawyers in Pennsylvania by Super Lawyers Magazine since 2004. Super Lawyers has listed him as one of the Top 50 Lawyers in Pittsburgh. He has been recognized continuously since 2004 by Best Lawyers in America as one of Pittsburgh's Best Workers Compensation Lawyers. He was recognized as Professional Hockey Players Association Workers' Compensation Panel Attorney of the Year 2010, and the National Football League Players Association Workers' Compensation Panel Attorney of the Year in 1993.
