Bette Orr is a partner who specializes in product-liability and insurance issues. Bette’s practice is centered on complex, multiparty negotiation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR).
Prior to joining Gilbert LLP, Bette was a partner at Dickstein Shapiro Morin & Oshinsky LLP in Washington, D.C. From 1997-2000 she was also a member of the firm’s Complex Dispute Resolution Group. From 1989-1997 Bette was affiliated with Covington & Burling LLP in Washington.
In representing corporate defendants and policyholders in mass tort and insurance disputes, Bette’s cases have involved:
Bette has resolved through settlement significant disputes between corporate policyholders and major U.S. and U.K. insurers. Bette has advised corporate policyholders in obtaining insurance assets that have been transferred in large-scale corporate restructuring and in determining respective obligations for liabilities among various corporate affiliates. She has also represented corporate policyholders and other entities in securing insurance proceeds available to meet the obligation of bankrupt estates. In addition, Bette represents policyholders on a number of creditors committees for insolvent insurers in the U.K. and U.S. and has participated in determining payment amounts and terms from these insolvent companies. The complex cases on which Bette works often require a unique understanding of the interaction between environmental issues, asbestos issues, and plan issues related to insurance assets.
Bette has also represented pro bono clients in Hurricane Katrina-related matters. Along with other Gilbert LLP lawyers, she has consulted with various governmental and private sector attorneys with respect to insurance coverage for Katrina-related losses.
Bette is a frequent speaker at industry events and has authored several articles on insurance-related topics.
