Demetrius E. Carney is a member of the Government Relations practice of the Political Law Department at Perkins Coie. He specializes in assisting clients with government relations and lobbying issues in the City of Chicago. Mr. Carney represents clients on health care, land use and development, local government, environmental, education, tax, gaming, minority business certification and many other issues. Mr. Carney also maintains a public finance practice. Mr. Carney, by Mayoral appointment, is currently serving a second term as Chair of the Chicago Police Board.
On the Police Board his duties include deciding cases involving allegations of serious misconduct made against members of the Chicago Police Department. These cases range from highly visible charges of excessive force to less visible, yet still quite important, allegations of wrongdoing. As an impartial decision-maker, Mr. Carney must strike a balance between the public's interest in addressing police misconduct and the rights of the accused. Mr. Carney's role in all cases is to undertake a thorough review of each case and render a fair, unbiased decision. In controversial cases, Mr. Carney leads the Board in rendering a written decision which becomes public record.
