I gained immediate and extensive experience in civil litigation while at Frank & Finger. My practice focused on tort and employment litigation and insurance coverage disputes. I gained a working knowledge of the Colorado Rules of Civil Procedure and became well versed in the civil litigation process. I served as lead counsel on several matters that resulted in favorable outcomes for my clients, including a private nuisance and trespass claim that settled just prior to trial. I successfully drafted a wide-range of pleadings ranging from dispositive motions and responses to discovery disputes to motions in limine. Because of the firm had a high volume of cases and only two attorneys (the partner and me), I regularly was required to identify and implement creative solutions to unique problems.

As a trial attorney with the state Public Defender’s office I successfully defended hundreds of clients against felony and misdemeanor charges ranging from homicide to DUI. I achieved successful outcomes during plea negotiations and at trial where I tried over 25 cases to jury verdict – mostly as lead counsel. I also honed my motions practice by drafting and arguing numerous motions at all levels of trial court. I developed a thorough understanding of the Colorado Rules of Evidence as well as the demeanor and trials skills necessary for effective courtroom advocacy and dispute resolution.

As a law clerk for Judge Kane, I researched and drafted opinions and orders covering a broad range of topics within the civil law including state tort law, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Federal Bankruptcy Code, and commercial contract disputes. My work frequently required learning and applying procedural rules as well as complex state and federal statutory schemes to motions for dismissal and summary judgment.
Colorado Supreme Court, Law Clerk to Justice Rebecca Love Kourlis, August 2005 – February 2006
My work for Justice Kourlis entailed researching and drafting opinions as well as memoranda recommending whether to grant or deny petitions for certiorari. My time with Justice Kourlis instilled in me the importance of setting up a case in the trial court for successful appeal.
