Ann Al-Bahish is an attorney with Jackson Gilmour & Dobbs, PC, based in Houston, Texas. Ms. Al-Bahish has over fifteen years of experience in environmental, commercial and tort litigation, including trial experience as first and second chair counsel.  She has worked on large water pollution cases in New Jersey and Oregon.  Ms. Al-Bahish recently obtained a complete defense verdict in a high profile New Mexico environmental contamination tort lawsuit involving multiple claimants and complicated expert evidentiary issues, including the successful court exclusion of an original published epidemiology study by the opposing side’s experts.  Ms. Al-Bahish also assisted with the trial of a CERCLA contribution lawsuit in the Eastern District of Texas in 2007.  As part of her litigation practice, Ms. Al-Bahish has developed a specialty in working with diverse expert testimony at all stages of litigation, including motions to exclude expert testimony and the defense of the admission of expert testimony under Daubert v. Merrill Dow Pharmaceuticals and related state law rules and case law.    Ms. Al-Bahish has represented a diverse array of clients throughout her career including upstream oil and gas concerns, large petrochemical companies, transportation and lumber companies, restaurants, universities, Internet companies, automobile manufacturers, governmental entities, health care organizations, nonprofit corporations, and private individuals.  Ms. Al-Bahish has augmented her environmental litigation practice, as well as her interests in environmental and public health, by pursuing a PhD in public health at the University of Texas School Of Public Health, majoring in health policy with minors in environmental health and epidemiology.

Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, Ms. Al-Bahish was raised in Huntsville, Texas by two lifelong educators, and graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in economics from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.  After graduating cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1993, Ms. Al-Bahish began and has continued to practice law in Houston, Texas.

Ms. Al-Bahish has been very active in the community, especially in the area of public health, environmental policy, and pro bono legal services.  She is currently the Chair of the Board of Healthcare for the Homeless – Houston and is on a citywide commission to address homelessness and affordable housing.  She has represented Justice for Children in several unique appeals involving children’s rights and the admission of psychiatric and psychological testimony.  She was awarded a Committee Newsletter Special Mention Award from the American Bar Association’s International Section for her work on the Environmental Committee Newsletter, specifically for collecting and editing environmental policy and law briefs from lawyers practicing around the world.  Ms. Al-Bahish has also represented clients through Catholic Charities and YMCA International Services in political asylum, and Violence Against Women Act and human trafficking cases.  She has traveled extensively to parts of the Middle East as well as Mexico and sub-Saharan Africa in connection with the study of and assistance with public health initiatives.

Ms. Al-Bahish has extensive experience in litigation, particularly environmental litigation including CERCLA cases.

Environmental and Commercial Litigation: Ms. Al-Bahish has represented plaintiffs and defendants in numerous environmental claims including CERCLA, Texas Solid Waste Disposal Act and state common law claims.  She has tried cases as either first or second chair and has handled multiple mediations and arbitrations in environmental, tort and commercial matters.  Ms. Al-Bahish has substantial experience in working with expert testimony, medical issues, and property damage issues. Representative experiences include:

  • Recent CERCLA trial experience in the Eastern District of Texas representing a third-party plaintiff.
  • Trial counsel and coordinator of medical causation/epidemiology and other scientific evidence in a high profile toxic tort case in which the jury returned a complete defense verdict.  Argued and drafted multiple Daubert motions successfully.
  • Favorable arbitration outcomes in CERCLA case involving pesticide formulation facility and commercial matter involving international shipping contracts.
  • Represented energy companies in litigation arising from upstream activities, and obtained dismissals or favorably settled numerous cases.
  • Performed environmental/corporate due diligence.
  • Litigated successfully on behalf of a United States subsidiary of a Mexican corporation in a breach of  contract and breach of fiduciary duty case against its president.  Significant challenges were the application of Mexican law and the review and synthesis of the companies’ Spanish documents.
  • Won jurisdictional challenges for global auto manufacturer and full-service financial services company.
  • Assisted with the drafting of environmental enabling legislation for Iraq under the supervision of the United States Coalition Provisional Authority. 

Professional Background

Prior to joining Jackson Gilmour & Dobbs, PC, Ms. Al-Bahish practiced for over ten years with Haynes and Boone, LLP in the environmental section, specializing in litigation.   She began her legal career as an associate at Vinson & Elkins, LLP and also practiced in a small litigation boutique before joining Haynes and Boone, LLP.

Ms. Al-Bahish is licensed to practice in the State of Texas, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Ms. Al-Bahish has also been admitted pro hac vice in a variety of other state and federal courts where she has had active litigation matters pending.

Ms. Al-Bahish received her law degree, cum laude, from Harvard University in 1993.  While there, Ms. Al-Bahish was a legal writing instructor and moot court teacher.  She also was the Articles Editor of the Harvard Civil Rights Civil Liberties Law Review as well an editor and contributing author to the Journal of Law, Medicine and Health Care.  Ms. Al-Bahish participated in the intensive Trial Advocacy Workshop at Harvard and represented legal services clients from Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts while still a student.   Ms. Al-Bahish was also an executive officer of the Women’s Law Association.

Ms. Al-Bahish received her Bachelors of Arts in Economics, magna cum laude from Trinity University in 1990.   She was involved in student government, including as class representative and as a member of the Student Court, was the President of the Toastmasters Chapter, and worked in the community tutoring and designing children’s programs at an area Battered Women’s Shelter.  She was a Trinity Presidential Scholar and music scholarship recipient and received multiple awards including the Outstanding Sophomore Student, Who’ Who Among American College Students, Phi Beta Kappa, and National Finalist for the Campus Compact Humanitarian Award.
