Richard T. Abell received his B.S. in 1972 from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was designated as an MIT Scholar. In 1975, he received a J.D. from the law school of the University of Pennsylvania, with honors.
Mr. Abell's practice is focused on civil litigation, both in commercial matters and bodily injury claims. Mr. Abell has represented contractors, professionals, building owners and individuals in jury and bench trials in various Pennsylvania counties and federal court in regard to contractual disputes, commercial claims, construction disputes, bodily injury claims, intra-family disputes and other events. Mr. Abell has successfully represented owners seeking compensation for construction-related damages, contractors sued for claimed contract breaches and alleged defective work, and professionals sued relative to claims for financial losses and construction damages relative to alleged deficiencies in design and construction management services.
Mr. Abell has also represented clients before the Pennsylvania Board of Claims, various private and governmental arbitration forums, and local government entities. Mr. Abell also devotes a substantial portion of his practice to the representation of municipal entities as to sewer and construction matters, including condemnation, bidding, and construction phases, and in the resolution of contract and construction disputes, through mediation, litigation, and arbitration procedures.
Mr. Abell regularly serves as an arbitrator selected by attorneys from other firms to resolve disputes outside of the court system.
Mr. Abell has come to Powell Trachtman after having been a senior partner with another Montgomery County firm where he practiced for over 25 years. Mr. Abell is a past president of the Montgomery County Trial Lawyers Association.
